Our commitment
Accessibility at abrdn
At abrdn, we believe that websites and digital services should be accessible and easy to use by anyone, regardless of ability, age, or technology.
That means that all customers and clients, including those with permanent or temporary disabilities, visual or hearing impairments, cognitive, and/or motor disabilities, should be able to easily use our websites and digital services.
Our aim
To help make sure our websites and digital services are accessible to the widest audience possible, we follow the W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines. These are considered the international standards for web accessibility.
We aim to be fully AA compliant with WCAG 2.1.
That means making sure that:
- Website text is as simple as possible to understand.
- Text or accessible HTML alternatives are used to convey any information in images, illustrations, charts, etc.
- Sufficient colour contrast is used to help with readability and colour alone is not used to communicate information.
- Interactive elements are easy to identify and use for all.
- Navigation options are clear, consistent, and can be carried out using speech recognition software.
- Most of the website can be read aloud by screen reader.
- The scale of the page content can be increased up to 300% without the text spilling off the screen.
- Captions and/or transcripts are provided for video and audio content.
- Instructions, guidance, and feedback for submissions or error messages are clear and easy to understand.
What we’re doing
Our digital design system
The abrdn digital Design System is a library of components, styles and design patterns that follow usability and accessibility best practice.
This allows us to build accessible websites and digital services from the beginning of any new development.
We are continuously improving and expanding our design system to make sure that it continues to meet the changing needs of diverse users and changes to accessibility standards.
Monitoring and checking accessibility
We continually check and evaluate our services. We do this by:
- Running monthly accessibility reports using automated checker tools.
- Carrying out accessibility expert manual evaluations on:
- New components or features whenever they are released.
- Key website journeys and pages every 12 months.
- Running usability testing with people with diverse abilities.
Building awareness and increasing our knowledge
We recognise that the importance of making our digital services accessible and inclusive is not fully understood throughout our business. So we are working to raise awareness and understanding of accessibility through ongoing internal communications and training.
This will help us to make sure that we consider accessibility as an equal requirement when we design and develop our digital products and services, and that the needs of diverse audiences are fully accounted for.
Our current position
- Documents that are in PDF format may not be fully accessible to screen reader software and may have poor colour contrast.
- Not all images that contain information have alternative text descriptions.
- Fund performance data and other fund information may be presented in graphical/visual format with no alternative data formats available.
- Some interactive elements and states have poor colour contrast.
- Some areas of our websites, platforms and online forms may not be fully navigable using just a keyboard or when using a screen reader.
